Wastewater Technician/Trainer (Wastewater Utility Technical Assistance and Training Provider)

Full-time, exempt

Job Description:

SCRWA is seeking a wastewater professional to provide on-site technical assistance, training, and funding assistance to small and rural wastewater systems and communities (serving fewer than 10,000 people) across South Carolina, including tribal communities. The position supports three EPA-funded programs administered by the National Rural Water Association (NRWA): wastewater compliance, acquisition of finance, and decentralized wastewater. Typical work includes on-site assistance with operation, maintenance, management, and Clean Water Act compliance (e.g., collection systems, lagoons, treatment troubleshooting, asset management, emerging contaminants, cybersecurity, and emergency response planning); helping systems apply for funding such as CWSRF, USDA, and CDBG, including rate studies; and developing Community Wastewater Assessments and Solutions Plans.

The Technician also teaches classroom and hybrid training for operators and board members (CEU-approved courses, certification preparation, regulatory and safety topics), coordinates with SCDES, EPA, and local officials, works toward annual program goals for assistance and training hours, records daily activities in NRWA's Waterlog system, and contributes to quarterly reports and success stories. Within 45 days of hire, the Technician completes NRWA's online Utility Management Certification and attends at least 20 hours of NRWA training each year, including the annual In-Service training.

Minimum Qualifications:

SC wastewater treatment or collection system operator license.

At least 5 years experience in the wastewater utility industry.

Valid driver's license (SC license required within 90 days of hire) and an insurable driving record.

Reliable vehicle and willingness to travel extensively statewide. Some overnight travel may be required.

Ability to perform field work at treatment plants, lift stations, and collection systems in all weather, including lifting, climbing, and extended driving, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Experience with funding programs (CWSRF, USDA, CDBG), rate studies, or classroom instruction preferred.

Compensation:

Starting salary range: $50,000 to $65,000 depending on experience.

401k with up to 5% employer match

Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Package; 100% employee; 50% dependent premium

Short term and long-term disability

Paid Vacation, Holiday and Sick leave

Travel reimbursement at the IRS standard mileage rate

Email Resume and Cover Letter to SCRWA Executive Director, Jill Miller, [email protected].

Position open until filled. This position is funded by federal grants through NRWA. Offer contingent on a background check, driving record review, and E-Verify employment eligibility verification.
