MetroConnects (Metro) is a special purpose district governed by a seven-member Commission that operates and maintains approximately 1,500 miles of sanitary sewer mains within Greenville County in South Carolina. Metro is seeking a successful candidate to fill the available Engineering Intern position from June to August 2026.



The Engineering Intern position will have the opportunity to work with multiple groups within the Engineering Department, including private development, project management, and construction. The position will perform engineering tasks related to projects and provide technical support for engineering operations. This will be a part-time position working Monday through Thursday 8 am - 5 pm, Friday 8 am - 12 pm and will report to the Engineering Director.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities




Private Development Projects

  • Verifies capacity request and development project submittals are complete.

  • Performs capacity assurance evaluations and calculations.

  • Provides review of sewer design plans for developer funded projects.



  • Maintains files for developer funded projects.

  • Utilizes the asset management system to create and complete work orders, child work orders, and tasks to and from other internal departments.

  • Develops effective working relationships with developers and engineering consultants.



  • Performs periodic project inspections to assess project quality.

  • Attends pre-construction meetings in accordance with Metro policy.

  • Operates and utilizes various equipment and tools in the performance of duties including a computer, printer, and motor vehicle.

  • Provides assistance and guidance to general public.




Metro Capital Projects

  • Reviews capital project plans, specifications, and contract documents.

  • Coordinates with project consulting engineer and contractor.

  • Attends progress meetings with consulting engineer and/or contractor.

  • Performs periodic and final inspections of projects.

  • Reviews engineer and contractor pay requests and change orders.

  • Provides technical assistance and support as needed.




Others

  • Attends job sites as part of the Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC), as needed.

  • Performs various general office duties.

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of design and construction standards and specifications.

  • Operates and utilizes various equipment and tools including vehicles, computers, printers, etc.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.




Minimum Qualifications



  • Currently attending a community college or university with an emphasis in construction, civil engineering, or related field. Applicant should have completed at least 1 year of community college or university.

  • Preferred experience in wastewater collection system design, construction, or operations and maintenance. Other inspection experience may also be considered.

  • Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.

  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills (record keeping, work orders, time management, follow up, etc.).

  • Strong problem solving, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and sense of urgency, ability to prioritize with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.

  • Ability to interact with departments throughout the organization, multi-task, and deal with interruptions while meeting timely deadlines.




Beneficial Skills and Experience

  • BlueBeam, Cityworks, GIS, MS Excel, MS Word, AutoCAD.




Compensation

Position salary range is anticipated to be $18 - $20 per hour based on education and experience. Salary is negotiable based on experience. The position will not include SC Retirement or medical/health insurance. A background check and drug screening are a condition of employment. Metro also conducts random drug screening during employment.
